So this was a movie I was waiting for! I was so excited for it. I was ready for it to be everything I wanted. Perhaps I nitpicked a bit but it was a bit of a disappointment to me. I will avoid spoilers as best as possible while providing a small little summary of what I thought of this movie.
Firstly, the art is gorgeous! There was never a moment where the art wasn’t good. The landscapes, the characters, it was all simply beautiful. I loved the contrast in the areas between the two characters art wise, it was stunning and just enough different that you knew something was definitely different. Music! Well done, just enough in the areas it needed to be. It added suspense when you needed to and it even manage to bring a couple tears. A beautiful addition to the art for sure!
My second biggest point is character development. They went into great lengths to let you see the differences between the two characters while moving towards a centralized plot. I found myself enjoying the male character a bit more, but that may be just due to how passionate he was, well that and the random funny moments with him. There was never a point where he just stopped, he just kept going towards finding her. The female character was fun, I found myself enjoying her but there were many points where I felt they were trying to make you feel bad for how her lifestyle was. I found her lifestyle interesting, but I didn’t like that it felt forced to pity her lifestyle for not being normal. Even the side characters were flushed out and interesting! So props to that.
Now, you hear all these amazing thing. The characters reacting to each other is perfect too. So what’s my beef? The ending. The ending just felt, like a let down. They gave you all this build up and you knew it was going to go one of two ways, you knew that it had to resolve in one of these ways, whether good or bad. Instead of giving you either they took a really weak out. Instead of taking anything that felt fulfilling it just felt like they stopped trying at the end of the movie. My biggest issue was definitely the ending, the entire movie made me feel so many wonderful things and then the ending was kind of like they were sitting there going “Well we could give you a good ending, but that would be cliche” or “well we could end it this way but our fans would be mad”. This is defintiely a personal opinion but I felt the ending made the movie a waste. You pretty much watched it all realizing that it didn’t matter at all really. Sure it did make a big difference in terms of the female character, but honestly, that was it. She got a second chance [spoiler, sorry!] but they didn’t remember anything!
Anyways, I give Your Name a 8/10. Beautiful art, music, character and everything, but the ending made me so upset I didn’t find myself recommending it.
