So I stumbled upon this three season anime a bit ago. By stumbled I mean I whined for a new anime and my muse gave me this. This anime has three seasons and has some stunning art, plot twists and good character development. I am writing this review a bit later than I should have so some of the details alude me. Aside from that I will not spoil anything if I can manage to.
Season one is a good set up, it throws you into the story rather fast, giving you a good feel for the characters while making you feel like you missed something. You’re curious about how they got there and how things got to this point, but it makes you want to keep watching. The main female character causes the story to push forward as she looks for her father, however, you find her reactions to things to be rather interesting. At points when most would be afraid she just pushes through. I think this is great because it shows that she’s able to push through even in the face of danger. It’s not like she’s never scared, cause she is, but it’s nice to see that she’s not always frozen in fear. Season one introduces the main “group” of people in which you will undoubtedly get attached to, as well as introducing the main story points that will drive us through season 2 and 3.
Season two was devastating for me. I find myself attached to the wrong character, to put it lightly. The storyline in season two seems to ramp up very quickly and right as you’re like “They can do it!” you notice a string of bad luck. Well they say bad luck comes in pairs and boy does it. This season is no exceptions as despair plagues your favorite characters. With the introduction of another plot twist you find a good amount in common with the main female character. She’s confused, she wants to help, but there’s nothing she can do. Everything she tries makes it worse and to make matters worse, some of it is her fault. Love began to bloom late season one and comes full force in season two. I will warn you season two is technically the last season. Don’t be like me and think season three will give you some crazy plot twist. It doesn’t.
Season three is actually a prequel to season one. You get a new main character instead of the girl, but the main group is the same. You find this main character shows you the makings of the story that you felt you missed at the beginning of season one. Though it doesn’t continue season two’s storyline it does a good job filling in the gaps of how season one started, how things got to this point and why all the characters act like they do.
All in all Hakuouki is a great anime with a good story line. It’s a bit slow at times but if you can keep curious enough it does get very good. It has good romance elements, plenty of action, good suspense and the art is beautiful. I give it at 9.8/10. I can’t make it perfect can I ? haha. The story is good, I did find two things that weren’t resolved but they were minor.
