So I’ve had this concept for a long time but never really knew if I should try it or not. So, I suppose we’ll give this a bit of a try and see what happens from here. If it looks popular enough I’ll keep it as a new serious.
So this story will be a bit of a flashback for myself, the game of topic will be Ragnorak 2.
A couple years ago I felt that I was being outed by my current boyfriend. Him and all his friends just always were doing things 24/7, and every time I asked to join, well, they had some excuse. Finally I managed to get them to let me join them. At the time, my gaming experience was nintendo 64, gameboys and gamecubes, not much else. They had told me they would let me join them in Ragnarok 2. Me, wanting to not be alone, quickly agreed and downloaded the game. Finally after many hours of downloaded, I got the the character screen. Before me was something I didn’t think of, mostly because of my lack of knowledge, classes. So, on a call with all of his friends I finally asked. “What class do you guys want me to play?”
This was a mistake, they were all assholes and I should have known that. For the next three hours I got to hear how “amazing” they were at their roles. Oh I’m the most amazign wizard that has ever existed, oh you wouldn’t believe how great I am at beastmaster, you’ll find yourself worshipping the healing of my priest. Yes, you know what that means, they didn’t have a tank.
Thrown into the world of mmo’s, into a game I didn’t quite understand, into a role I had no idea of, but alas, I didn’t know so I agreed. Quickly I found myself confused as to what was happening, how things worked, what I was suppose to do, but I did quickly notice a pattern. I needed to run in first. Okay, that should be easy enough. So for some levels things went seemingly find. I’d charge into combat, quickly pull everything I could, pop some cooldowns so I took less damage and stood there until they killed things. For a while it went well, it didn’t seem to have a problem. Soon enough we got around level 20-30 I can’t remember which, but we got to this area before a dungeon, there was this giant bug. They had told me it was “super easy” and there was nothing to worry about. So as per normal, I charged in, popped my cooldowns and stood there. Except this time, as they nuked it, nothing happened. The bugs hp bar didn’t move even a little. My cooldowns were running low and so was my health. Wait, we had a healer, it was my boyfriend.
“Um, I need healing?” I was confused, why was I dieing, why wasn’t it dieng. Not once did I see a heal, and then soon enough I died, meaning we wiped. Of course, we picked ourselves up, they told me I needed to cooldown manage better. Oh okay, it was definitely me then, they would know, right?
I charged in, popped one cooldown, stood there, attacked a bit, watched as they nuked but nothing happened. It was like a slow motion of the time before, except this time I tried again. “Can I get a heal?”
“Huh?” I could hear my boyfriend ask.
“You’re a healer aren’t you, can I have a heal?” I asked again as my hp was getting low
“Just pop another cooldown we almost got it.” he answered
Soon enough I died, the bug was still sitting at over 70% of it’s health and we wiped again. Remember, this isn’t a boss, this is some big bug not even 20 feet from the dungeon entrance.
For the next couple hours I heard how I was dragging them down because I clearly wasn’t tanking well enough. Of course, I had enough, and I told them to do it themselves. So we all gathered, I stood back, they started their “nuking’ and they swiftly died even faster than before. Instead of realizing that I just needed some healing and clearly it would be fine, I was told that because I went tank we could do nothing and that I’m just a waste of time.
So, obviously I didn’t play that game again, but don’t worry, this story has a resolution. A couple years later, I mentioned this story to my muse. He was amused and saddened by how this went down, so what did we do, we downloaded Ragnarok 2. We ran through the quests at lightning speed, I don’t even remember what I was playing, but it didn’t matter. Finally we found the bug. The bug that made me almost not play mmo’s ever again. I warned him and my other friends about my countless struggles. We charged in, they nuked and it died instantly. 5 seconds had passed since the pull and the bug simply died. I was so shocked I literally burst into an uncontrollable fit of laughter. All those years ago, I wasn’t a bad tank, it wasn’t even that I needed healing really, it was that their dps was so bad, that there was nothing we could do at the time.
So there you have it, your first MMO horror story from me, I have plenty more, but I figured I would start at the very beginning and see how it fares. I hope you all enjoyed it!
